JAY WALKING

Jason Raso

Jay Walking Part 2

Here is part two in a series of walking lessons…

The following PDF shows five lines of a 2514 progression in the key of C. (Dm7 – G7 – Cmaj7 – Fmaj7) Progressions like this are fairly common in jazz standards but also many other styles.

Line 1 uses a diatonic whole or half step moving from beat 4 to beat 1.

Line 2 uses a voice leading of a 7th on beat 4 to a 3rd on beat 1.

Line 3 uses a voice leading of a 7th on beat 4 to a 5th on beat 1.

Line 4 uses diatonic neighbour tones.

Line 5 uses chromatic neighbour tones. (Note: I’m not a fan of these on the bar of Cmaj7 or Fmaj7, but I have heard many a player do it!)

Give it a try and keep swingin’!
